FAQ
“I’ve never done yoga before. Is that OK?”
Yes. Yoga for Grief Support is a very gentle class, where the focus is more on breathing, meditation, self observation and self awareness, than an intense physical work out. The class is geared towards a beginner level style of practice, with focus on correct alignment, and proper body mechanics. If you have practiced yoga before, there will be modifications offered to deepen your practice.
“I have physical limitations. Can I still participate?”
Yes. All ability levels and bodies are welcome to come to class. Often students have physical limitations which affects their practice such as sore joints, arthritis, back pain etc. Modifications and adaptations will be offered to anyone in class who requires them. Yoga for Grief Support is taught by an Occupational Therapist who is knowledgeable about physical injuries and limitations, and your specific needs will be accommodated.
Each student registering in Yoga for Grief Support will be asked to complete a Physical Activity Readiness questionnaire. As with any new physical activity, it is best to see your physician to ensure you are medically well enough to participate.
Yoga for Grief Support is held on the second floor, so if your physical limitations affect your ability to safely climb stairs, you will have difficulty accessing the class. If this is the case, please contact Sandy for more information and assistance.
“I’m a senior. Is this class appropriate for me?”
Yes. There is no age limit. If you have suffered a death loss, and feel you would benefit from this class, you are welcome.
“I’ve suffered a loss, but it isn’t related to a death. Can I still come?”
At this time, the group Yoga for Grief Support is limited to students who have suffered a death loss. The reason for this is to create a cohesive and safe group in which there is mutual understanding and support as to the topics presented and discussed – which are focused on death and bereavement.
All losses, of all descriptions, can and do create grief in our lives, and yoga is a wonderful way to support yourself. If you have suffered a loss that isn’t related to a death, and you are interested in yoga, please contact Sandy to discuss other class options. Private yoga support is also available.
“Do I have to register? or can I just drop in?”
You must register for Yoga for Grief Support. Space is limited, and due to the sensitive nature of the group, drop-ins are not allowed. Pre-registration is necessary to hold your spot. To register you must complete a brief questionnaire about your loss, health and yoga experience, and sign a wavier. These documents can be emailed to you in advance. Contact Sandy to register.
"I can't come to all classes in the group session. Am I able to make up a class on the other day Yoga for Grief is offered?"
Due to the sensitive nature of the class, the cohesiveness, safety and support of the group you are registered in, make-up classes with the other group is not feasible. There will be an email summary of what was worked on in each class to keep students up to date in the event a class is missed.
“I’m unsure if this class would be beneficial.”
If you have questions about if this class is appropriate for you, please contact Sandy to learn more about the class. We can discuss your specific needs and determine if it is the right fit.
